I am ROFLMAO right now.... Brooding One vs Boy Kitteh ... it is a tie!

1. Boy cat fools around in teh kitchen, knocks over a container of sugar packets, freaks out, scrabbles on hardwood floor, runs to hide his shame behind the curtains in living room window.

2. Brooding Husband attempts to harass Boy Cat further by grabbing him through the curtain... but window flies open and Boy cat falls outside.

3. Rescue attempt by Brooding one - cat is retrieved from the bushes, but during heroic rescue, Brooding One steps in the remains of Halloween pumpkin composting under bushes.

4. Boy cat is upset with puffed up tail - Husband is hopping around living room with rotten pumpkin guts on foot. It is midnight. I'm glad the neighbors can't see this, or there could be law enforcement involved. Boy cat is still hissing & growling....

Who won??

Father's Day

------------------------------------------------------------

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes.

When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on.
Hence the phrase....
'Goodnight, sleep tight.'

------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts....
So in old England , when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them 'Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.'

It's where we get the phrase
'Mind your P's and Q's'

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many years ago in England , pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. 'Wet your whistle' is the phrase inspired by this practice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

At least 75% of people who read this will try to lick their elbow!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Important Announcement!!

The ATC Full Moon Circle scheduled for tonight in Index has been canceled due to hazardous road conditions. Everyone Please stay safe and warm!

If you are inclined to do any personal Full Moon work tonight, I would like to share the following excerpt from the Hermit's Lantern written by Rev. Paul Beyerl:

" This Full Moon has an excellent influence. It is a time to invoke blessings for all manner of benefits and goodness into your life. You are in the early stages of a Neptune transit lasting several months. Although it typically brings some uncertainty and even confusion about the direction of your life, it also opens you up to new possibilities. This will most be felt in the areas of your belief system, personal philosophy, and desire to learn and grow. Mars Days the 16th-21st may feel challenging and something you were hoping for may not turn out as you had hoped, but it is good to have this over with before the Solstice."

Many Thanks and Blessings to All -
Kathi De Anda
ATC Full Moon Ritual Coordinator

" when the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace" ~~ jimi hendrix ~~

Greetings from Merida!

Another lovely afternoon in the Yucatan! The trip so far has been delightful - arrived at Cancun on Monday night, Mi madre picked me up and we drove down the coast to Playa del Carmen (AKA the Mayan Riviera) - all along the way were monstrous resorts that seemed like fortresses from the road. But we had a nice, simple little hotel room a block from the beach - with a Starbucks right across the street! (thanks, Miss Erin!)

We started off with an unusual adventure - we found an "ecopark" called Kantun-Chi and took the tour of their caverns.... not just caverns, they were large underground lakes that were linked together by small passages. They were crystal clear, and very deep, surrounded by stalagmites & stalagtites. We swam in the lakes and made our way through the passages. It was very eerie, to be swimming underground! There were only 2 other people in our little group a couple of women from Oregon. They brought their cameras in, and hopefully will email some photos to us. The Gods of the Underworld did extract an offering of blood and silver from me as passage through their realms - I lost an earring and got a small scrape on my ankle which didn't hurt much, but seemed to bleed a lot more than it should have...

Spent Wednesday morning swimming in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, then headed to Ek Balam for some time exploring the ruins. This is one of the few larger temples that people are actually allowed to climb. We got some great photos, arriving at late afternoon so the light was golden-tinted, and the tour buses had left - we were the last ones to leave the ruins, so we were able to take a private moment to pay our respects to the Gods of Ek Balam. Our legs paid the price for the climb - our thighs were sore for the next 2 days!

Yesterday, Madre & I just kicked around Merida, went to the Mercado Central - and wow - talk about sensory overload! The market is a rabbit-warren of narrow corridors that covers maybe 10 square blocks of the city - with everything under the sun for sale - the colors, sounds, and smells of the market can only be experienced - it is a cacophony of all the senses thrown together.

My cousin and her guy flew in last night, so we are going to meet up with them later this evening, in theory, And tomorrow ... the big one: Chichen Itza. No one is allowed on the temples anymore, but this is one of the largest temple complexes in Mexico, I have been to Tikal, in Guatemala ( a very long time ago, when people were still allowed on the Jaguar Temple!) where the complex is larger , but the temples themselves are not as massive. Then there is Copan, in Honduras, which is the largest one, I think.

Right now it is siesta time for everyone, so it is pretty quiet. I think that I will go hang out by the pool for a while.

BTW, it is the Feast of the Virgin of Guadelupe right now, and the Fiesta de Navidad is also in full swing... the old Catholic in me is smiling! Gotta love those dying & rising Gods!

Oh my - where to begin?

We had a loverly (and unusual) Thanksgiving at the home of the Monkeygirl's mama.... No turkey for us - we had Dungeness Crabcakes! They were amazing. We did miss the Monkeygirl herself, though we did get the opportunity to harass her via speaker phone.

Friday was pretty mellow, we prowled around some local shops looking for a few last things we needed to perform a handfasting for a couple of women in Everett this afternoon. The altar is all packed and ready to go... we got the nervous phone call this morning - yes, we have everything we need, - yes, it is going to be beautiful ...

Then worked on setting up the final announcements for SMF auditions in various places - spread the word if you know of someone who might be interested!

So - tomorrow will be annoying, only because I have to work that one last day before I fly down to the Yucatan to visit mi Madre! Excited! I arrive in Cancun on Monday night, and we go to our hotel on Playa del Carmen (the Mayan Riviera) for a couple of days. We will drive back to Merida after that, where my Mom lives. My cousin from New Orleans will meet us there and hang out for a couple of days. Then Sunday we will go off to Chichen Itza to explore the Temples there! I will spend a couple more days with the fam, then head back home on Tuesday.

The Brooding Husband has a honey-do list and Horse & Kitty duty while I am away... check in on him for me, OK?

See y'all when I get back!!

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in
a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front
of him. When the class began , he wordlessly picked up a very large and
empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls He then
asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the
jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas
between the golf balls . He then asked the students again if the jar was
full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the
jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous '
'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between the sand . The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to
recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the
important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and
your favorite passions-- and if everything else was lost and only they
remained, your life would still be full.'

'The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house
and your car.'

'The sand is everything else--the small stuff . If you put the sand into
the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the
golf balls The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on
the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important
to you.'

'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with
your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to
dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and
do the laundry. Take care of the golf balls first --the things that
really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand .'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked.'

'It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

Pumpkin Carving ala Red Green

OK, so there I was, carving my pumpkin... Brooding Husband came home from work and wanted to carve his too. Could he just use a knife like everybody else? Of course not! My Canadian friends (and those related) can appreciate this - he had to get out his Dremel tool, and it quickly took a downward spiral into a truly Red Green moment - the whirring of the drill, pumpkin puree and shrapnel flying all over the kitchen. I do mean ALL OVER - ceiling, windows, lampshade, in his hair, on the cats...everywhere. Not sure how I will explain this to the cleaning lady!

I have to admit that it did turn out pretty cool - it looks like a psychotic monkey with human ears. I carved two, the traditional way. My first one was great - an evil grin, sort of lopsided like he has Bell's Palsy. I ran out of steam on the second one, it has no nose and a HUGE mouth. It doesn't look too bright, sort of a "special needs" pumpkin. But ya gotta love all your pumpkin children equally, right?

Religion 101

Greetings All!

My presentation at the Religion 101 Lecture at the UW in Tacoma went very well. It was an interesting evening! Our first speaker was a professor at the UW, who spoke on Santeria. She gave a great presentation, though she never indicated whether she actually practices Santeria or not. The second speaker was a young man who is studying to become a Christian pastor. He was very sweet and earnest, and did a good job presenting his faith in a non-confrontational way for the most part. Next was a Buddhist gentleman who was just delightful. Some of the concepts of Buddhism are difficult for the Western mind to grasp. He was doing his best, though we had a time limit of 15 minutes which made it hard to go into any great detail. In between the speakers there were performances by two gospel singers with amazing voices. After that, the Rabbi was up. He gave his condensed history of Judaism and tried to cover the laws, thought there are a lot of them. (600+) - He only covered the 13 main ones. He ran a bit over on his time, but that was fine as we were a little ahead of schedule. He interspersed his talk with a couple of jokes to keep it from getting too serious, which was good. The speaker for Islam was another faculty member. He was from Turkey, and had a strong accent, also speaking very fast so it was hard to catch what he was saying. But he used a good tool during his talk - a book by Dr. Seuss - that helped him illustrate some of his points in a light hearted way. Then it was my turn - I covered the modern history of Wicca referencing Gerald Gardner, and then a brief explanation of what the ATC is. I went on to cover the Sabbats and the Esbats, and various concepts of how we see Deity. I ended with the Rede - do as thou will and ye harm none. It was a lot to cram into 15 minutes. I also tried to keep it as simple and approachable as possible.

After the presentations we had an open mike question and answer period. I expected to get questions, but surprisingly most of them were directed to the Rabbi, the young Christian, and the Muslim professor. (The professor who spoke on Santeria had to leave before the Q and A began.) I only got one question, and it wasn't really even about Wicca - it was on the uses of Deadly Nightshade! Oh My... So during the Q & A, a question about the laws in Leviticus came up of course (why can't I own Canadians??) - no, it was the famous line "thou shall not suffer a Witch to live" - and it was also on homosexuality. This was directed to the Rabbi and the young Christian. I got a little nervous at this point, but figured that the fire codes would protect me! The Rabbi passed on the question. The young Christian did not address the question of Witchcraft, but did quote the law in Leviticus about "a man shall not lie down with another man". This was near the end of the Q & A session. The Muslim professor then stood up, and quoted a line from his Dr. Seuss book to break the tension - it was brilliant! (Something about where you put your feet , that is where you will go).

After the event was officially over, an audience member came to me and thanked me for being there to represent Wicca - she was a Solitary, and not completely "out", but perhaps on her way there. Just before leaving I cam across a couple of students who were "polling" the speakers as they exited. The questions were on the nature of evil, and what is Truth. They were asking about what judgement or punishment there is in Wicca for causing harm, such as committing murder. Not having a lot of time (we were being ushered out of the building) I tried to explain the law of threefold return - they wanted to know what would happen if they did it anyway, so I responded that it was for the Gods to decide that. ( but that if you took it literally they would die 3 horrible deaths!) The concepts of the afterlife and retribution for causing harm are difficult to explain from a Wiccan perspective, since there are so many different views! I also had to dodge the question of Truth - as each of us finds our own Truth within ourselves, as the Gods reveal it to us - it is a great Mystery. Also a concept that is quite difficult to explain. Why they did not ask these questions during the Q&A session is also a mystery!

It was a great experience for everyone - peace, tolerance and understanding of different views were the emphasis of the evening. I was honored and delighted to take part in it.

And a Shout Out for my little sister - thanks for coming out and being there to support me! Love You!
